PDF/A file formats are specialized versions of PDF designed for archiving/preserving electronic documents. PDF/A formats 1a & 2a differ from PDF by prohibiting features unsuitable for long-term archiving, including attachments and digital signatures. The more recent PDFA/3a format does not prohibit attachments, but it still does not allow digital signatures.
